I want to propose the concept of KM competence, or the ability of an individual to effectivelly carry on knowledge management projects and activities (note that this differs from organizational competence, as studied in the field of strategy). In order to develop such a concept, I plan to delineate the KM field, mapping research related to knowledge and/or its management; to characterize knowledge workers and the nature of knowledge work; and to structure the concept of competence as a theoretical framework.
I am also investigating formal KM education, since as KM becomes an established discipline, demand for professional expertise may increase as well. The focus of my doctoral research, actually, is on how master's degree programs in KM contribute to develop KM competence. I am relying on a previous background in education, pedagogy and instructional design, and a recent interest in governance and organizational behavior in educational institutions.
