Most sectors and industries in the knowledge economy are currently experiencing a "Schumpeterian renaissance": innovation is today the crucial source of effective competition, of economic development and the transformation of society.
The Centre for Educational Research and Innovation (CERI) project, "Promoting the Economics and the Management of Knowledge", identifies four key factors that are becoming important drivers of innovation in the economy generally.
- science advances knowledge, technologies and practices, fostering innovation in many sectors of the economy
- users and doers on innovation are working cooperatively, creating new opportunities
- modular structures are free to innovate and keep the integrity of the system, making them more suitable to the instability and unbalance created by innovation
- information and communication technologies are the general purpose technology that create opportunities to transform products, processes and organizations in the whole economy
